“Alii” and Hello!
The Republic of Palau Postal Service is thrilled to welcome you to our newest website. The Palau’s Post Office is situated in downtown of Koror State of the Republic of Palau. Geographically speaking the Republic of Palau is an island nation that can be located on the map, between the Republic of Philippines and the US Territory of Guam.
In commemoration of our presence in serving our island nation, the Palau Postal Service is compelled to share with you of its brief history and the progress of its growth and independence over five decades since it first came into existence.
Years ago, subsequent to the conclusion of the World War II, the origin of mail service was formerly introduced to many of the Palauans by US Navy. It started out then, as the US Navy was entrusted with accountability for the dissemination of mails to the American constituents, who at the time were residing on the island, as well as to the general public. Afterwards, during the Trust Territory government era, the Palau Post Office was built at its current location today and continued its crucial mission by providing mail services to everyone on the island, under the direction and supervision of the United States Postal Service (USPS). Few of the Palauans whom were employed by the USPS back then enjoyed the privilege of employment under the Federal Government of the United States. This arrangement changed with the advent of the Compact of Free Association between Palau and the United States (the “Compact”). For many years that Palau Post Office was funded and managed by the United States Postal Service, after the implementation of The Compact between the Republic of Palau’s Government and the United States Government, the Postal Service then was turned over to the Republic of Palau Government to assume its full responsibilities of managing and funding its operation. However, as part of the agreement set forth in the Compact, its mailing rates and fees of both domestic and international mail remained consistent with the USPS rates and fees. As for mailing policies, Palau Post Office continues to comply with policies for both domestic and international mail that USPS adheres to as mandated in the Compact of Free Association. Additionally, the Palau Post Office still continues to receive assistance from US Government through USPS in terms of trainings, advice, and technical support.
As of today, Palau Post Office is an independent agency that operates under the executive branch, and operates under the direction and supervision of the Postmaster General. Currently, its operations has increased and expanded from handling a few pieces of mail since its inception to over two thousand parcels and letters are processed daily. It provides services to a population of seventeen thousand people, and includes mail for business and commerce as well.
Today, the Postal Service has established a proud tradition of issuing collectable, one-of-a-kind stamps and commemorative issues.
Most of its mails are flown in and out on commercial airlines on a daily basis, and the Postal Service also sends and receives surface mail on a monthly basis via commercial shipping vessels. Should someday you visit the Republic of Palau, please come by and visit us, and in this day of e-mails and high-tech communications - grab a postcard and send it to your friends and family abroad to commemorate your visit to the Republic of Palau.“Mesulang” and Thank You!
